Third Wave Corona

In India's first wave peaked in Sept 2020 and the second wave in May 2021.
The National Inistituate of Disaster Management (NIIDM), under MHA, has warned that the third wave will peak in October in recent report to the PM's Office.

THE PEAK

IIT Kanpur has predicted three likely scenarios for the third wave, based on te level of unlocking;

Situation

1. Strict inverventions [ Peak in late October, lower than 2nd wave (>2L per day)]
2. Back to normal [ Peak in October, lower than 2nd wave (3.2L per day)]
3. New & more deadly variants [ Peak in september, higher than 2nd wave (5L per day)]

DELTA-PLUS VARIANT

According to INSACOG, a group of 28 labs studying the variant, there are 3 worrying characteristics of it;
  • Increased transmissibility
  • Stronger binding in receptors of lung cells
  • Potential reduction in monoclonal antibody response
Though, there is  not enough evidence as of now to designate the Delta Plus varient as more dangerous than Delta, it being linked to a 3rd wave cannot be dismissed.

How will it affect children?

Individual studies by the Indian Academy of Paediatrics and AIIMS found that is no biological evidence that the 3rd wave will affect children more than adults.
  • Study by the Lancent Commission also suggests the same. However, children with underlying co-morbidities might be at higher risk.
  • There is a big shortage of Paediatric facilities such as doctors, staff, ventilators, ambulances etc,. if many children are infrcted.
